Cleaning your house’s floors raises some frustrating paradoxes — and we’re not talking about the tug-of-war between needing to tidy up and wanting to relax with some tea in front of the television.

While you want to keep your home spotless for your family, there’s something slightly disturbing about spraying and wiping chemicals all over every surface to do it. Fortunately, a number of companies have begun producing environmentally-friendly cleaning solutions that do the job without adding toxins into your living space.

But you know what? You can also clean your hardwood floors and carpets just as easily and effectively using every day ingredients. Yes, I’m talking about making your very own eco-friendly floor cleaner at home. Here are some of my favorites.

Hardwood Floor Cleaner:

  • 1/4 cup distilled white vinegar
  • 1 gallon warm water

Mix the above items in a pail, then use that to mop your wood or laminate floors. After washing, rinse the floor with water and mop up any excess. Never leave large pools of water, which can damage the floor or become a breeding ground for germs.
